The incident took place in Lady Bird Lake in east Austin on Thursday afternoon.

Austin-Travis County EMS said callers reported that a boat with four people on board would cross the Longhorn Dam around 2:36 p.m. KXAN reported.

The boat, which at one point lay partially over the dam, was tied to another boat with a rope as it pulled the ship away from the rushing waters of the dam.

Life jackets were also lowered to all four passengers via STAR Flight.

Authorities said both the boat and all four passengers were pulled safely off the dam and into open water by the Austin Police Department patrol boat on the lake.

Miraculously, the crisis was avoided and none of the four passengers were injured, the local news channel said.

Lady Bird Lake, the site of Thursday’s wild rescue, is no stranger to the headlines.

In March 2020, EMS retrieved a corpse from the lake under the Congress Avenue Bridge, Fox 7 Austin reported at the time.

Rescue teams had responded to a call about a person submerged in water and not surfaced.

According to the news channel, bystanders removed the person from the water and administered CPR before EMS pronounced the person dead just after 6:30 p.m.

In April, toxic blue-green algae were discovered in the lake, resulting in the deaths of at least five dogs, Impact on the community reports.

The toxic algae were also found in 2019 and 2020, according to the outlet. The area’s watershed protection department has since increased surveillance of the lake, leading an online dashboard where daily water samples can be taken, uploaded and observed.

Amazingly, swimming in Lady Bird Lake has been banned since 1964, according to an April 6 press release.

Authorities noted that the risk to humans is low and people can continue to boat and fish in the lakes, explaining Thursday’s miraculous rescue at Lady Bird Lake.
