A ship caught fire almost directly under the Sydney Harbor Bridge, prompting a rescue effort by passing vessels.
Emergency services received reports of a 30ft sports cruiser with smoke billowing from the cabin near the south end of the bridge shortly after 10am on Monday.
About a half-dozen vessels, including two ferries, approached the ship to provide aid to nine passengers before a Port Authority firefighting boat drenched it in water.
The passengers found shelter on a barge before being taken to New South Wales Marine Area Command.
A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics assessed the boat’s occupants and did not need to be taken to hospital.
Firefighters also went to the scene and boarded the boat once the fire was extinguished.

They discovered the fire had started in the boat’s engine compartment, but it is unknown what caused it, a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesperson said.
The spokesman said the boat was towed by water police after examination by firefighters.
New South Wales Police have launched investigations into the cause of the fire.
More to come.
