Blue Beetle is the first film in James Gunn’s new DCU, which is set to take place over the next decade.
Gunn announced his slate for the big overhaul of the DC Universe in January.
He explained that “DC has been out of touch with film and TV for a long time.”
“I have an incredibly deep connection to these characters, these stories and the desire to create this type of magic not only in the child that I was, but in the connection that I had with my father, with friends more later,” Gunn explained.
He added, “And wanting to create a unified world in DC where we tell stories.”
Gunn mentioned Blue Beetle in his initial announcement and confirmed that he would be an integral part of founding the new universe.
In a June interview with the Inside of You podcast, Gunn revealed, “I mean the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle.”
By speaking with Total moviedirector Angel confirmed, “We’re part of the universe, we’re part of the world, we’re part of the plans they’ve created for future DCU episodes, but we’re not tied to all of the movies of the pass.’
While it may not have had the best start at the box office, Blue Beetle has the potential to become a sleeper hit due to rave reviews from audiences.
