The first reactions to Blue beetle they are in
Fans and influencers are tweeting their thoughts on the latest superhero title and the general takeaway is this: Blue beetle is a surprisingly strong superhero origin story with a winning performance from star Xolo Maridueña (cobra kai) and lots of heart, humor, and a warm embrace of Latino culture.
The new film, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, stars Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, who gains super-powered armor after an interaction with an alien beetle. It is the first DC movie to focus on a Latino superhero and the penultimate project from DC’s old guard before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins (there are still aquaman and the lost kingdom coming in December). DC is certainly hoping to break excess superhero fatigue and do better than the recent disappointment of The flash.
Since the following are not official reviews from movie critics, they should be taken with some skepticism as early reactions tend to be positive (just read the hollywood reporterSummary of hyperventilation The flash reactions, “among the best superhero movies ever made,” from CinemaCon for an idea of how those tweets sometimes age poorly).
The trailer:
The official description: “Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate, returns home full of aspirations for his future. As he seeks to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly stumbles upon an ancient relic of alien biotech: the Scarab. When Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be his symbiotic host, he is granted an incredible armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the BLUE Super Hero.
Blue beetle it was initially slated to be an HBO Max release when DC planned to make a series of movies for the streaming service that has since been rebranded as Max.
Gunn confirmed in the Inside You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast that Blue Beetle is “the first DCU character” and that “the first full DCU movie is Superman.”
While Maridueña said THR last year: “The family aspect of this film and the character is inherent to the comics and very special. The family that we have been able to create in the film (the mother, the father, the uncle, the sister, the grandmother) I feel that this aspect of being a superhero has not been used much”.
Blue beetle hits theaters on August 18.
