A road divided between two town councils that was resurfaced with new asphalt on only one side has been criticized by locals as “bureaucracy gone mad”.
The rare photo of Poath Road in Melbourne’s southeast shows half the road newly resurfaced but the other side worn and untouched.
The 2km road runs through the suburbs of Hughesdale and Murrumbeena, but the road’s midpoint is the border between two separate town councils.
Hughesdale is part of Monash City Council, while Murrumbeena is overseen by Glen Eira City Council.
The western side of the road for which Monash Council is responsible was resurfaced two weeks ago.

The east side of the road managed by the city of Glen Eira has not yet been repaved despite needing an upgrade, and potholes have appeared in some parts of the street.
Business owners located on the busy road were incredulous at the half-done job.
George Xylourgidis, who runs Ciccio’s Pizzeria on Poath Rd, said he couldn’t understand why both sides of the road were not resurfaced at the same time.
“We pay our rates as businesses and it’s just an easy task that should have been done,” he said. A current issue.
Danny, a local resident who lives in the Glen Eira area, said the job had been made unnecessarily complicated.
“It’s a bureaucracy gone crazy,” he said.
‘Why wouldn’t they do it on both sides?’

Another resident, Wayne, criticized both councils for the bungled work and said it was “ridiculous” they couldn’t work together to ensure the entire road was improved at the same time.
Glen Eira Council chief executive Rebecca McKenzie told ACA the council will repave the eastern side of Poath Rd once other “major construction developments” in the area are completed.
“This reduces the need for unnecessary rework,” Ms McKenzie said.
“Both councils have worked together to ensure current Monash works complement any future Glen Eira works.”
