A man wearing a cape and underpants on his head is the subject of a manhunt in Melbourne after a botched armed robbery.
The man threatened a staff member at a Port Melbourne hotel with a firearm about 2am on Wednesday.
However, he left empty-handed after the plot did not go as planned.
Footage released by police shows the man running down the path before tripping over what police believe is a cape he was wearing.
Armed Crime Squad detectives are asking for public assistance in identifying a man involved in an attempted armed robbery at a licensed premises in Port Melbourne last week.
The attempted armed robber fell, dropping a bucket and other unidentified objects he was carrying.
In the act of stumbling, he has turned towards the camera, and a dark material, which the police suspect to be underwear, can be seen worn as a balaclava.
In a statement issued Monday, police say the man entered a hotel and threatened a staff member with a firearm, demanding cash.
The staff couldn’t access the money, so the man got nervous and left.
No one was physically injured during the attempted armed robbery.
“At the time of the incident, it is believed he was wearing some type of dark material wrapped around him such as a cape and a pair of dark colored boxers on his head,” police said in the statement.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen the man, or who may have dash cam or further CCTV footage.
Police patrolled the Port Melbourne area but were unable to find him.
In addition to the flowing shroud, the man was wearing a black T-shirt, light-colored pants, and white sneakers.
