‘Like buying Coldplay on Wish’: Birds of Tokyo performance is PANNED by AFL Grand Final viewers who say they ‘slaughtered’ Silverchair cover

Birds Of Tokyo commanded the stage for the AFL Grand Final show at Perth Stadium on Saturday.

The Western Australian band played one of their biggest hits, Lanterns, backed by an orchestra, creating a dazzling moment.

But when they took on a cover of the Silverchair song Straight Lines, the viewers claws out.

Many posted the gig on social media, with Silverchair fans insisting vocalist Ian Kenny didn’t match up with the Newcastle band’s frontman Daniel Johns.

One person tweeted: ‘The worst cover of a Silverchair song ever!’ while another agreed: ‘Please don’t touch Silverchair. They are sacred.’

Another complained: ‘It could have been a flex worker making a Silverchair cover if he really knew the damn words and didn’t look down.’

Another tweeted: ‘The 13-year-old son who loves Silverchair absolutely loves this massacre at the moment and I’m here for it!!’

Another agreed: ‘Nice touch in the halftime show showing love for Silverchair, but Birds of Tokyo just proved there’s only one Daniel Johns.’

Others were impressed by the band themselves and compared them to a cheap version of Coldplay.

“What’s this, Coldplay’s Wish version on the halftime show?” one viewer wrote, while another said: ‘Is this what passes as music these days???’

“Okay, so never heard of #BirdsofTokyo and I’ll never hear them again if I can help it,” someone interrupted.

Another tweeted: “I have no idea who this band is, but I understand they are completely tacky. They make @coldplay look ultra-modern.”

But others enjoyed the show, with one person writing, “Birds of Tokyo made it!” while another said: ‘Half-time show well done. Think we should move to Perth!’
