Billy Porter opens up about why Harry Styles is historic Fashion the cover still doesn’t suit her.
In a recent conversation with The Telegraphhe Pose the star had problems with Anna Wintourwho made Styles the first man to cover Fashion. She shared that a few months before the cover came out, she had a Q&A with Wintour in front of Condé Nast staff.
“That bitch said to me at the end: ‘How can we do better?’ And she took me so by surprise that I didn’t say what she should have said,” Porter told the UK publication, which was: “Use your power as Fashion to raise the voices of the leaders of this de-gender fashion movement… Six months later, Harry Styles is the first man on the cover.”
He kinky boots However, the Tony winner explained that his problem is not with Styles.
“It’s not Harry Styles’ fault that he’s white and cute and straight and fits into the infrastructure like that,” Porter added. “I call the guardians.”
He continued: “(Styles is) white and straight. That’s why he’s on the cover. Non binary blah blah blah blah. No. He doesn’t feel right to me. You are using my community, or your people are using my community, to elevate yourself. You didn’t have to sacrifice anything.
This is not the first time that the Cinderella star has spoken out against the Fashion cover. In an October 2021 interview with sunday times, said he felt the fashion industry accepted him because he had to once he created the conversation around non binary fashion. And even then, Styles still got the cover.
“I’m not dragging Harry Styles, but is he the one you’re going to try to use to act out this new conversation? He doesn’t care, he just does it because it’s the thing to do,” Porter said at the time. “This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my whole life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars and not get shot now. All you have to do is be white and straight.”
