- Gerry Harvey criticizes government ministers for lack of business acumen
- He says leaders are not prepared to lead the nation out of the cost of living crisis.
Billionaire businessman Gerry Harvey has criticized the country’s politicians, saying they are unprepared to deal with the growing cost of living crisis because they have never had a real job.
The Harvey Norman chief executive said he was continually frustrated by the caliber of leaders running the country and believed they needed to be matched with proven business leaders with a track record of financial success.
“I think it’s a bit embarrassing that all of our politicians mostly come from unions or lawyers, and unionists have never run a business, and lawyers have never run a business,” Mr. Harvey told the ADH TV host, Chris Smith, on Wednesday.
‘Now, we put the two of them together, the little mixes there… and you think, “Oh, they make a lot of mistakes. How can we help them?” They urgently need help.
“Let’s go out and get a bunch of business people who could be an advisor… and you’re not allowed to be a minister unless you have a business advisor to help you, because you make too many mistakes.”

The outspoken octogenarian retailer confessed he was not particularly impressed with US President-elect Donald Trump (pictured with his wife Melania).
The maverick businessman and former vacuum cleaner salesman, who founded his iconic retail chain in 1982, went on to suggest that ideally government ministers would get all their plans approved by an accomplished businessman before putting them into practice.
“It’s a bit like having (US President Donald) Trump in charge: you say to the minister: ‘Okay, you can’t do anything, unless you get the go-ahead, anything you want to do, I’ll do it.'” or you don’t,” Mr. Harvey told Smith.
“And maybe then we’ll have a country that’s a little more entrepreneurially run, because right now, some of the things they do, and you just look and think, ‘Oh, they didn’t do that.’ ‘Do that,’ but they did.” .
Although the outspoken octogenarian retailer confessed that he was not particularly impressed with President Trump, he thought Europe was continually producing the world’s best leaders with proven business acumen.
“Let me tell you, I’m not a big Trump supporter, but I’m not a big supporter of the girl who lost (Kamala Harris),” he told Smith.
‘It’s like, where did these two people come from?’
“But then you look at what’s happening in so many other countries and you look at the quality of the people running those countries, like in the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, all these places.” .
“When you look at all the people who run it, you say, ‘Oh, they’re good.'”
