“He’s recovered well and is looking forward to getting back on the cobblestones as soon as possible.”

Bill, who plays Ken Barlow’s older sayings, is the only remaining character to still appear on the show since it first started in 1960.

During his time on the ITV program, Ken has been married to three different women four times and engaged in various love affairs.

He was also involved in a long-standing feud with arch-rival Mike Baldwin, played by the late Johnny Briggs until 2006.

Bill previously talked about how he wants to say about the soap for as long as possible, insisting that it was 60th anniversary: “ While I can and they want me, I’ll be there.

‘Retirement is not on the radar at all. I have no plans for that.

“I don’t even think about how they would write Ken down when I left. Because hopefully that will never happen. ‘
