Customer’s ‘shocking’ find at Big W sends shoppers into meltdown: ‘What is going on here?’
- A Melbourne mum was shocked to spot Christmas clothes at Big W
- The retailer is setting up for ‘Christmas in July’ in Australia
A shopper was left shocked after spotting a surprising new collection on offer at her local Big W store this week.
Jasmyn, from Melbourne, came across several Christmas products at the discount store despite it being June – including $30 reindeer jumpers and Santa Clause blanket hoodies.
Jasmyn vented about the find online and said it was too soon to set up for the holiday season; she quickly realised, however, that the Christmas clothes were for a new Christmas in July campaign.
Another Big W customer shared a snap of a promotion email for the new items, confirming they hadn’t launched official Christmas stock just yet.
It didn’t stop shoppers from complaining, however, with many saying the tradition was ‘unAustralian’ and ‘a money-making grab’.

‘Oh please, these companies give me the sh*ts,’ a furious woman wrote. ‘Before you know it, Christmas stuff will be around all year. It makes me angry!’
‘This is too soon for Christmas in July as well,’ a second said.
‘When I was a kid you had about 20 sleeps until Christmas when the hoopla started. Now the kids have to countdown 150 sleeps,’ a mum wrote.
Another revealed that she was present for some of the festive set up.
‘I was in big W yesterday chatting with some friends, and an employee was putting [Christmas hoodies] out near us and asked us not to judge,’ a woman said.
She added, ‘We had a giggle, and the employee also thought it was ridiculous. She suggested something more multipurpose that could also be worn at Christmas time, as no one will be able to wear a thick Oodie style jumper in the heat!’

But others were on board and added Christmas jumpers to their wish list.
‘If I had a Christmas hoodie, I’d put the aircon on freezing just to wear it in summer,’ a woman revealed.
‘I need these, it’s never too early for Christmas!’ another said.
‘I love a festive July feast – one of the best times of the year,’ another wrote.
‘When else can you wear an ugly Christmas sweater in Australian except winter?’ a woman asked. ‘I love it!’
