President Joe Biden enjoys a night on the town during his trip to Tokyo when he will join Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and sample some of the country’s world-famous cuisine.

With the security of the Indo-Pacific, the rise of China and the war in Ukraine on the agenda, it will be what the chef calls ‘Japan Present’ delicately plated on the Kuchuon restaurant menu.

‘We express each dish with the new sense of our chef based on the tradition inherited from our founding in 1955,’ according to the restaurant’s website.

The nod to history points to another Japanese tradition: US presidents gorging themselves on sushi and grilled delicacies and even going to the bar during outings to Tokyo with Japanese prime ministers, who use the events to add points at home while breaking the ice with a powerful ally.

Kuchuon offers a traditional Kaiseki menu, a fixed menu where “you can enjoy the sensitivity and feeling of the chefs through all the elements such as materials, containers, spaces and tastes,” according to the restaurant.

The chef prepares meals to order, and during special events has hot plates of shabu-shabu, Sukiyaki and sushi, all amidst a ‘stunning stage’ in a candlelit setting. Meals can cost around $200.

The restaurant boasts a service that it says hopes to create an “irreplaceable moment for guests.”
