President Joe Biden baffled Baltimore residents and commuters Tuesday after recalling riding a train over Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed after being struck by a container ship.

The 1.6-mile arch and truss bridge carries four lanes of Interstate 695 highway traffic crossing the Patapsco River and the Outer Harbor of Baltimore, but does not include railroad tracks.

But Biden said he took the train over that bridge “many times” during his trip from Delaware to Washington, DC.

“A container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I have passed many, many times traveling from the state of Delaware, whether by train or car,” Biden said.

A freighter crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday, causing it to collapse.

Biden spent his decades-long political career in Congress riding the Amtrak train from DC to his home in Delaware.

The Amtrak train route includes a stop in Baltimore, but circles around the port without crossing it.

The White House disputed reports of the president’s poor memory of his travels.

“The president clearly described how he crossed the bridge while traveling between Delaware and D.C. during his 36-year career in the Senate,” White House spokesperson Robyn Patterson said in a statement. statement to the New York Post.

Biden promised in a speech Tuesday that he would “move heaven and earth” to rebuild the bridge as soon as possible and reopen the Port of Baltimore, although he acknowledged it would take time.

“My intention is for the federal government to pay the full cost of rebuilding that bridge, and I hope Congress will support my effort,” he said.
