President Joe Biden again attacked “that loser,” former President Donald Trump, for his comments suggesting Americans should inject themselves with bleach during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The president headlined the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies’ black-tie gala Tuesday night at the Washington Convention Center, as he continued to commemorate Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month .
Biden mentioned the pandemic, including the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes due to COVID’s Chinese origin, and Trump’s handling of the crisis.
“Look, I’ll never forget him lying about the pandemic, telling Americans to inject bleach into their skin,” Biden said, pausing. ‘I wonder if he did it.’ the president asked, laughing.
“It might explain some things,” he said.

The president headlined the 30th annual Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies gala, highlighting the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes amid the COVID-19 pandemic due to the outbreak that began in China.
The president also criticized Trump on immigration reform.
Biden recalled how Congress had come close to passing a comprehensive immigration bill, although Republican support waned after Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee, interfered.
“This bill had a majority, the bipartisan bill, it had majority support in the House and the Senate, but they told me that other guy, that loser,” he said, as the crowd cheered him on.
“I think he’s having problems,” Biden said then.
The president recalled how Trump called on Republicans to block the bill, ruining his chances.
But he is wrong. “Republicans in Congress must act because it is the right thing to do and Americans need it done,” the president added.
The president mentioned Trump by name, rather than calling him his predecessor, on Republicans’ 2017 tax legislation.

Biden also criticized Trump for being insensitive to one of the country’s many mass shootings, but mixed up the details.

The mass shootings in Atlanta, Half Moon Bay, and Monterey Park impacted the Asian American community.
In the days leading up to the January 15 Iowa caucuses, there was a school shooting in Perry, Iowa, which Trump mentioned at a campaign rally.
“I want to send our support and deepest condolences to the victims and families affected by yesterday’s terrible school shooting in Perry, Iowa,” Trump said.
“It’s just horrible, very surprising to see it here,” he told the Mason City crowd. “But we have to get over it, we have to move on.”
