Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican nomination for president on Thursday night with a marathon speech in which he revived the assassination attempt and again attacked old enemies.

President Joe Biden is still fighting for his political survival after a disastrous 48 hours in which he was diagnosed with COVID and told by Democratic leaders to drop out of the 2024 race.

Biden’s campaign manager acknowledges they have work to do, but notes the president is in the race to win

Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon acknowledged Friday that the president’s reelection campaign has work to do but argues they’ve seen only a “small” slippage in the polls.

Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, O’Malley Dillon agreed that the campaign has been through a difficult time since Joe Biden’s disastrous performance in the debate against Donald Trump.

“I’m not here to say that it hasn’t been a tough few weeks for the campaign. There’s no doubt that it has been, and we’ve definitely seen some decline in support, but it’s been a small movement,” he said.

“The American people know that the president is older. They see that. They knew that before the debate. Yes, of course, we have a lot of work to do to make sure that we’re reassuring the American people that yes, he’s older, but he can do the job and he can win.”

He also argued that Trump is “the same person he was in 2020.”

“Donald Trump is at his best with his numbers. There’s no new voters he can bring to the table, right? So that’s kind of an important framework to remember. And we’re about to get into our convention.”

She dismissed questions about whether Biden’s stay in the race will hurt Democrats in subsequent elections, saying the party has “extraordinary Democratic candidates on the roster in swing states and non-swing states.”

“The president knows better than anyone how to present himself and win at the local level.”

And, he noted, Biden is there to win.

“You’ve heard the President say it directly over and over again. He’s in this race to win and he’s our nominee and he’ll be our president for a second term.”

Donald Trump’s team prepares for a race without Joe Biden

As he put the finishing touches on a record-breaking speech at the Republican National Convention last night, former President Donald Trump’s political advisers were strategizing his campaign against someone other than the current Democratic nominee, President Joe Biden.

Trump advisers met at the Trade Hotel next to the Fiserv Forum to discuss who Vice President Kamala Harris might choose as her running mate if she replaces Biden on the ticket. Politico reported.

MAGA Inc., the leading pro-Trump super PAC, has been conducting opposition research and messaging tests against potential Biden replacements, the outlet reported.

They include Harris, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and even billionaire television personality Mark Cuban, a person with knowledge told Politico.

Another Trump-aligned super PAC, the outlet reported, commissioned a poll on how Trump would fare against Harris and said the data showed Harris doing worse than Biden against Trump, contradicting some other poll findings so far.

Rep. Sean Casten of Illinois has become the latest House Democrat to demand that Biden drop out of the presidential race.

Casten (IL-06) wrote an opinion piece for the Chicago Tribune calling for the 81-year-old to be released with “all the dignity and decency that have surrounded his half-century of public service.”

He urged the embattled Biden, who has COVID, to step aside so he could “cement his legacy as the president who saved our democracy in 2020.”

Casten added that Joe should step aside for “trusted hands” in 2024 who can “carry on his legacy.”

AOC: Democratic plan to oust Biden will also unseat Kamala

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic “Instigator Squad,” took to Instagram Live overnight to vent about her party’s effort to remove President Joe Biden from the ticket, warning that many of those who want him to step aside also want Vice President Kamal Harris off the ticket.

“If you think there’s a consensus among people who want Joe Biden gone … that they’re going to support Vice President Harris, you’d be wrong,” he told viewers.

And AOC called Democrats who have been giving reporters anonymous quotes about Biden “lies,” saying elected officials in her party who say a loss to Donald Trump is a fait accompli should resign their seats.

“My community does not have the option to lose,” said the New York socialist.

“If they’re going to come out and say all their little things in secret, without anyone knowing, but they’re not going to be totally honest, I’m going to be honest with them. I’m in these rooms. I see what they say in the conversations,” the congresswoman said.

“Many of them are not only interested in removing the president, but in eliminating the entire list.”

Trump jokes about the “chart that saved my life”

Donald Trump joked about the graphic that “saved my life” by making his head spin as his would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired shots at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Speaking at the end of the Republican Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday, the former president was able to crack a joke about the assassination attempt after earlier getting emotional in his remarks recounting the attack.

Trump gave a moment-by-moment recount of the events he experienced at his last rally and said he would never talk about it again because it is “too painful.”

“Less than four years ago, I handed over to this administration the strongest border in American history,” Trump said. “But you can see from the chart that saved my life: That was the chart that saved my life.”

“I said, ‘Look at this.’ I’m very proud of it. I think it’s one of the best charts I’ve ever seen, done by Border Patrol. It showed everything just as it was. You know, the chart.”

At one point, Trump appeared to notice the graphic on screens behind him at the Fiserv Forum.

“Ah, there it is. It’s pretty good. Wow!” the former president praised.

“The last time I put that chart on the table, I didn’t look at it,” he joked. “But without that chart, I wouldn’t be here today. I never looked at it.”

“I never got to see him that day.”

All of Trump’s children were in the honored guests section of the stadium except for Barron, although the father of five said the 18-year-old was present.
