The debate could be a defining moment for the 81-year-old as Americans remain cautious about giving the oldest president in history a second term.

It will be a great test of the president’s mental fitness, as he will be on stage with only a notebook, a pencil and a bottle of water.

You will not have the help of a teleprompter and will not be able to chat with your attendees during commercial breaks.

Each campaign has touted the other candidate’s mistakes and missteps, but debate experts say it’s Biden who really can’t afford a moment of one-upmanship.

While Trump has made verbal gaffes lately, this month the White House had to respond to a trio of what press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called “cheap deepfakes”: viral videos that appeared to show Biden walking away or freezing.

There was a video in Italy that appeared to show Biden looking in the wrong direction during an event with skydivers, an image not helped by Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni guiding him back to pose for a photo.

In reality, Biden was interacting with paratroopers who had just landed off-screen.

Obama leads his former vice president on stage

President Joe Biden was accused of “freezing” at the end of his A-list fundraiser in Los Angeles earlier this month, while former President Barack Obama escorted him off stage.

In another video, at a Juneteenth celebration, Biden stares, smiles and watches the musical performance as other attendees dance.

Jean-Pierre responded in a press conference by asking why that was a crime.

‘The president stayed there listening to the music and did not dance. Sorry, he didn’t know that not dancing was a mental health issue,” he said at the June 17 briefing.

“It’s a weird thing to point out, actually, when you look at the people around him, if you look at the zoomed-in video of the people around him, they weren’t, they weren’t… there were some people who weren’t dancing either,” he added.

A third “cheap fake” occurred when Biden appeared to pause before leaving the stage during his A-list fundraiser in Los Angeles with George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Jimmy Kimmel and former President Barack Obama.

The much younger Obama removed Biden, his former vice president, from the stage.

Before the era of cheap fakes, Biden fell off his bicycle in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and tripped on the stairs of Air Force One several times.

Now, most of the time, he boards the larger Air Force One using the shortest flight of stairs.

Biden also tripped on a sandbag during a graduation ceremony in Colorado last summer.

The Biden campaign responded by highlighting moments in which Trump, just 3.5 years younger, has seemingly shown his age.

“Here’s a montage of Donald Trump confused, lost, wandering around and greeting no one.” an X post from the @BidenHQ account he said last week.

The campaign then shared a 2.5-minute video featuring clips of Trump, during his presidency, leaving events early or awkwardly standing where he was supposed to.

The battle over who is best suited to be president began four years earlier.

During the 2020 campaign cycle, video of Trump tiptoed down a ramp during an appearance at West Point in June went viral.

That led to similar questions about Trump’s physical condition, and he had to deny that he suffered from Parkinson’s disease.

“I stayed there for hours. And what do I do? “I get publicity about walking up a ramp,” said one Trump horrified to Wall Street Journal. And does he have Parkinson’s? I don’t believe it.

In an initial tweet about the incident, which adopted the name “ramp-gate,” Trump described the ramp as “very long and steep,” adding that it “had no handrails and, most importantly, was very slippery.”
