Biden, 81, calls Trump the biggest threat to democracy and criticizes his attempt to free the January 6 prisoners as he tries to reverse waning support among Hispanics in an interview with Univision.

President Joe Biden in a new interview criticized his predecessor Donald Trump for his inaction on January 6 and his plans to free convicted rioters if he takes office.

The president’s meeting with Univision in Spanish comes as a new poll shows his “favorability” lead over Trump is declining at a time when battlegrounds in Arizona and Nevada could tip control of the White House and Senate .

In the first clip released, Biden was asked what the biggest threat to democracy and freedom was, and he immediately turned to Trump.

“Donald Trump spoke, he uses phrases like you’re going to gut the Constitution, you’re going to be a dictator from day one,” he said.

That was a reference to Trump’s 2022 quote calling for “the termination of all rules…even those found in the Constitution” and his comment in an interview about being a “dictator for a day.” He later confronted Trump for watching television during the Capitol riot and for his continued embrace of the Jan. 6 indictments.

“The idea that he would sit in the office – and I’ll show you before they leave – outside the Oval Office and watch for hours at the attack on the Capitol and the destruction and the chaos and the people who were killed by the police. Officers who died and call them political heroes? Biden said. ‘Call them patriots? And he says if he is elected, he will release them all because they are illegally detained.

“Think about the things he says, look at the way we talk about minority populations and Hispanics and what we say about them is… anyway, I can’t think of any other time in my life in history that there has been occurred, in which you”. I’ve had someone who has had this kind of attitude: he says, “I’ll be a dictator from day one.” Nobody doesn’t believe him,’ he stated.

Biden’s interview comes as Trump has made inroads at a network he used to clash loudly with following its merger with Televisa in 2022.

a new Axios/Ipsos The poll shows Biden’s favorability lead over Trump is declining. Biden’s lead among Hispanics in overall favorability is narrowing.

In March, Biden’s favorability rating was 41, a nine-point lead over Trump’s 32 rating. In June 2023, Biden had 47 percent favorability and Trump had 29 percent.

Trump wrote last month that one of his “first acts” would be to “release the January 6 hostages who were unjustly imprisoned.” Last year he said he would “very likely” forgive “a large portion of them.”
