With the year almost over, many people will already be planning their next getaway.

This is especially the case for Luxembourgers.

Our World in Data analysis implies that people from the landlocked nation located between France, Germany and Belgium take 4.3 international trips a year, on average.

Meanwhile, Slovenia is second on the list.

Residents of the central European country – dubbed the continent’s “rising star” for its historic cities, stunning lakes and soaring peaks – travel abroad 1.4 times a year.

In third place are the Belgians (1.3).

These foreign trips could also be counted as business trips, as Our World In Data defines them as a case of a foreign trip and overnight stay.

It comes after research by travel association ABTA in October found Brits are going on holiday more than ever.

Brits took an average of 3.94 holidays over the past 12 months, and Spain remains the most popular foreign destination.

This was slightly up from the previous year and surpassed the high of 3.91 in 2019 before the Covid pandemic brought travel to a standstill.

However, that data, based on a survey of 2,000 people, clashes with a separate analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS found that Britons made 71 million foreign trips in 2022, putting Britain just above the threshold of one foreign trip a year.

However, this figure increased to 86.2 million in 2023.

UK residents visited Spain the most in 2023, accounting for 21 per cent of all overseas visits, ONS figures showed.

They were followed by France (11 percent), Italy (6 percent) and Greece (5 percent).

Our World in Data, which compiled the table, said: ‘Tourism has increased enormously in recent decades.

‘Aviation has opened travel from the national to the international level. Before the Covid pandemic, the number of international visits had more than doubled since 2000.

‘Tourism can be important both for travelers and for the people of the countries they visit.

‘For visitors, traveling can increase their understanding and appreciation of people from other countries and their cultures.

‘And in many countries, many people depend on tourism for their income. “In some, it’s one of the biggest industries.”
