It is the most essential element for a workout.

However, an astonishing 40 percent of Australian women do not wear sports bras when they exercise, according to a new survey.

The lingerie brand Berlei has launched its latest revealing ad that illustrates the serious harm of not wearing the correct sports bra.

The campaign dramatizes the impact that different sports can have on our bodies by showing a ball in the form of breasts that are thrown, kicked, beaten, thrown through a basketball hoop and hit with a tennis racket.

The dramatization urges women to avoid having their breasts "play their own game".

Here, the Australian company explains why women should wear the right support garment before going to the gym, to the studio or to the courts.

About 43 percent of women are unaware that not wearing a supportive sports bra while exercising can contribute to breast tissue damage that can cause breast dropping later in life.

"Most women are aware of how their breasts feel during exercise because they can rebound, feel uncomfortable and painful," said Berlei Innovation's lead designer, Adele Kershaw.

However, they are often unaware of the damage that may occur underneath the soft tissue surface and the delicate Coopers ligaments inside their breasts if they do not have the correct support.

"Women are aware of the need for different equipment, such as footwear and clothing for different sports, but they should be aware of the importance of using the right sports bra for different sports to prevent this damage."

If you plan to do yoga, exercise in the gym or prefer to hit the bar, using the right equipment will help you improve your workout, reduce rebound and increase comfort.

"Our research shows that breasts move differently depending on the sport or activity women are doing," Adele said.

"However, an astonishing 76 percent of women admit to wearing the same sports bra regardless of activity.

"We hope through this campaign to bring to light the importance of using the correct sports bra during different exercise activities and to encourage women to prioritize their breasts by choosing the right support when it comes to sport."

For more than 20 years, Berlei partnered with the Australian Sports Institute (AIS) to perfect the art of ensuring that its bras provide the right support for every sport.

Designing your stylish bras with compression and an encapsulation support system, the technology separates the breasts and holds them individually inside your own cup.

Berlei is the only brand of bras in Australia tested, backed and approved by AIS, offering bras that reduce breast bounce by up to 60 percent.
