What is nephrostomy?

A nephrostomy is a tube that allows urine to drain from the kidney through an opening in the skin on the back.

It is a drainage tube that is placed directly into the kidney through the skin.

This tube is placed using the highest standards of practice under radiologic or X-ray guidance.

The tube will then be connected to a drainage bag outside the body.

This tube is placed if you have a blockage in your ureter (the tube that runs from your kidney to your bladder).

Blockage in the ureter can prevent urine from draining from the kidneys into the bladder and, if left untreated, can cause kidney damage.

Most of the time, this is done as an emergency procedure when there is a serious infection, severe blockage, or kidney damage.

The length of time the tube remains in place depends on each patient and your surgeon will inform you accordingly.
