Jordan Henderson was stunned when asked if Ajax’s 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard on Sunday was his “worst performance”.

The England international joined the Eredevisie giants in January after leaving his controversial season in the Saudi Pro League.

Henderson has become a key figure in the Aajx first team since moving to Amsterdam, with the club resurrecting their season after flirting with relegation.

The 33-year-old played the entire match in which the hosts initially trailed 2-1 at the Johan Cryuff Arena before an 88th-minute goal from Brian Brobbey rescued the tie.

The result leaves Ajax six points adrift of the Eredevisie top four and Henderson cut an uncomfortable figure when subjected to an intense line of questioning after the match.

Speaking to ESPN in the tunnel, Henderson was asked directly: “Was this the worst game of the season since you’ve been here and maybe your worst performance?”

The former Liverpool captain initially laughed before sternly replying: “No, because we didn’t lose like you just asked us before the camera went on.”

The interviewer attempts to further irritate Henderson by doubling down on his initial statement and continuing strangely: “You said we didn’t lose, but…”

Henderson interrupted: “So it’s always worse when you lose the game.”

Then, moving on to a more tactical question about Ajax’s use of “too many square balls”, Henderson offers an explanation for his team’s poor performance, stating: “When you don’t play well, you continue until the end and I didn’t lose the game.” .

The embarrassing exchange finally ends with Henderson telling the reporter “you can call it whatever you want” after being asked if he could label it a “bad performance.”

Henderson has had a mixed campaign since moving to the Netherlands and is now waiting to find out if he has been chosen in Gareth Southgate’s next England squad.
