- Dr John Hosie dies in buggy accident
- Tributes have poured in for the young father
A veterinarian and young father of one has been identified as the victim of a fatal buggy accident on a rural property.
Dr John Hosie, 38, died when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding in rolled on his property in Richmond, northern Queensland, around 1pm on Wednesday, September 18.
Paramedics were called to the scene, but despite their best efforts, Dr Hosie could not be saved.
Dr Hosie grew up in Malanda watching his father Ian care for sick animals at his family business, Tableland Veterinary Service, before following in his footsteps.
In a tribute post on Monday, Tableland Veterinary Service (TVS) said he was a “regular outlier” at the clinic even as a young child.

TVS said it was “no surprise” that Dr Hosie enrolled to study Veterinary Science at James Cook University in 2005.
“John was a natural veterinarian: intelligent, intuitive, but above all, personable and charming,” TVS wrote.
“He interacted with people from all walks of life, but he was always most comfortable with cattle and horses.”
After graduating from university in 2010, Dr Hosie moved to Gympie Veterinary Service in south-east Queensland, before returning home two years later and becoming a member of the TVS team.
He later became a partner in the business while working towards his pilot’s licence, and was “at his happiest flying around the cattle stations of northern Queensland performing pregnancy tests, bull tests and absorbing station life” .

In 2020, he left Malanda to move 455 kilometers west to the Yan Yean cattle station in Richmond with his fiancee and fellow veterinarian, Dr. Michaela McClymont.
They married the following year, before welcoming their son Hayes in 2023.
Dr. Hosie is survived by his wife, son, parents and sister.
“He will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” TVS said.
“Our love and support goes out to all his family and friends at this difficult time.”
A memorial for Dr Hosie will be held in Townsville on Friday.
