An innocent taxi driver who died when a car traveling in the wrong direction on a road collided with his vehicle has been identified.

Father-of-three Sendeku Tesema, 58, was taking two passengers home from Perth Airport on Monday morning when the driver of a Toyota RAV4 is believed to have deliberately crossed the center line of the Leach Highway, according to the police

The two women in the back seat, ages 81 and 56, were mother and daughter returning home from a vacation.

All three died in the violent head-on collision.

The driver of the Toyota RAV4 also died on impact.

Mr Tesema’s wife was beyond distraught and needed an ambulance after hearing the devastating news.

His 18-year-old daughter said her father “was loved by everyone.”

‘He was the funniest and most loving man. Our deepest condolences to all other affected families,” said Eyerusalem Sendeku Achamyeleh. Seven news.

The tragedy has shaken the local taxi industry.

‘He is a kind person. It’s not bad,” said his colleague Setegn Abate.

“If everyone says ‘I have nothing,’ he helped everyone.”

The couple met as they normally did at the airport taxi rank at 2 a.m. Monday and spoke on the phone during their shifts, as was their routine.

Abate knew something was wrong when the contact suddenly stopped.

‘Then after 45 minutes, when I tried to call him, he (didn’t answer). The phone was off.

“I called him like nine times.”

Fellow driver Toli Wakli added: “It’s shocking for the taxi industry and for all of us.”

“It’s a big loss.”

The Toyota RAV4 was traveling on the wrong side of the road. Leach Highway in Cloverdale near Perth Airport when he collided head-on with the taxi around 3:40 am.

Police later revealed that the driver of the Toyota RAV4 He made a “conscious decision” to drive on the wrong side of the road, which has lanes and is separated by a center wall.

Detective Sergeant Hugh Le Tessier told reporters the man had driven erratically through nearby suburbs before entering the motorway by going up an exit ramp in the wrong direction.

Why the driver did this remains a mystery.

‘That’s probably something we’ll never know. “I mean, I can only… report the facts as we know them,” Detective Le Tessier said.

“We know what happened and our investigation is now focused on the motive, but I can’t answer that at this time.”

Despite the “very ferocious” fire that engulfed the Toyota RAV4, police managed to recover dash cam footage of the wreckage detailing the vehicle’s final movements.

“The RAV4 was completely engulfed in flames, so recovering the dash cam is certainly something we’re very glad we did,” Detective Le Tessier said.

“The files on that SD card indicate that he was driving on Belmont and Cloverdale streets prior to the incident, and that he was driving well above the posted speed limit.”

Detective Le Tessier said the accident was “very confrontational” and “almost the most horrific incident you could attend as a…police officer at a traffic accident scene.”

“It’s such a tragic event for that family, not just the family that lost a mother and daughter… there are four families that have been affected by this,” he said.

Following the accident, shocking images were shared on social media showing one car engulfed in flames and the other vehicle destroyed.

A 2.5 kilometer stretch of Leach Highway was closed for five hours Monday while crash investigators examined the scene and collected debris.

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant images to contact Crime Stoppers.
