Beloved Australian writer and patron of the arts Barbara Blackman died peacefully on Friday, aged 95, of natural causes.
Blackman was born Barbara Patterson in Brisbane in 1928 and was a renowned writer, poet, essayist and patron of Australia’s vibrant arts scene for decades.
She was married to the legendary Australian painter Charles Blackman, who died in 2018, from 1952 to 1978 and was the muse for many of his works.
Blackman’s daughter Christabel confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement: “We had Beatles music, writing and poetry, so it was a really beautiful send-off.” “She was absolutely extraordinary.”
“Barbara was a big advocate for taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture. He lived in the poetry of life.
Blackman overcame significant difficulties early in his life after being diagnosed with legal blindness and became an intellectual voice in the art scene.
She was well known for her incredible memoirs and poetry, which often reflected her personal experiences and relationships, including her marriage to Charles.
Throughout his career, Blackman wrote essays and reviews on literature and art, which showcased his insights into the creative process and Australia’s cultural landscape.

Blackman was the subject of a 2017 documentary called Seeing From Within, in which he discussed his long and celebrated career.
