Beloved Australian children’s actor and entertainer Marty Morton has passed away aged 82 after a long battle with cancer.

Morton was born in England in 1941 and moved to Australia at an early age, where he began his career as a stage performer and ventriloquist.

The veteran entertainer was known for his fun-loving stage presence and enthusiasm, and was a regular on the popular 1970s children’s variety show The Super Flying Fun Show, as well as Hey Hey it’s Saturday.

He often performed alongside his pet puppet Emu and entertained fans across the country with his fun and energetic routines.

Morton’s son Terry confirmed the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that my father, Marty, passed away on Friday,” he began.

“He’s almost 83. I love him and will miss him very much.”

Morton was a regular on Australian television for years and appeared in many popular shows including Division 4, The Young Doctors, Spyforce, All Saints and The Restless Years.

His 50-year showbiz career saw him entertain children and adults alike, and he also appeared alongside many well-known artists including Hugo Weaving and Georgie Parker.

He also appeared alongside Claudia Karvan and Susie Porter in the television series Puberty Blues in 2012.

Despite his declining health in recent years, he was a consummate professional and continued to entertain fans at the hospital where he was receiving treatment.

Morton’s contributions to show business earned him the Australian Entertainment Mo Award three times for Versatile Variety Performer of the Year, in 1982, 1983 and 1986.

He is survived by his sons Terry and Anthony.
