Belinda Carlisle opened up about being an ‘older singer’ ahead of her Fourth of July performance Tuesday.

In an interview with PeopleHitmaker Heaven Is A Place On Earth, who recently released her new solo EP titled Kismet, spoke about dealing with ageism in the music industry.

The 64-year-old singer, who rose to fame as the lead vocalist of The Go-Go’s, also spoke about taking a nearly 30-year hiatus and making her long-awaited return to American pop music.

For the star-studded celebration at A Capitol Fourth in Washington, DC, she revealed how she cares for her voice and maintains her health.

“I’m an older singer now and I really have to prepare a lot,” she explained before her performance and embarking on her summer Decades tour. “I used to take my voice for granted and I don’t take it anymore.”

“I’m very lucky to keep doing it, but I have to be careful,” she continued.

“I mean, when I’m on the road, I travel with three humidifiers and I have all these rituals that I do just to keep my voice healthy when I’m working,” she added.

Then, he referred to celebrating the holiday and performing at the United States Capitol.

I am a fan of fireworks. I haven’t lived in the country since 1994,’ he said explaining his enthusiasm for the opportunity.

“Since then, I’ve been able to attend a few 4th of July events,” Carlisle continued. “But for the most part, I’ve been out of the country and I miss it.”

On the subject of his long stints living abroad in a total of eight different countries, he stated that he returned forever with a smile: “I think I’m done.”

For more than two decades, the Grammy nominee has been traveling the world with her husband, Morgan Mason.

He explained that his experience facing ageism in the music industry influenced his decision to take a break from his career.

“My record company dumped me when I turned 40 and singing was the only thing I really knew how to do,” she explained.

“Of course I was mortified and panicked,” she recalled. ‘But then I thought, ‘Well, who am I?’ It started out as the most interesting part of my life: I had always defined myself what I do, so I knew there was more to it.’
