Baylor women’s basketball head coach Nicki Collen “was really offended” by comments about her program made in the Washington Post’s recent profile of former Bears boss and current LSU head coach Kim Mulkey .
However, the story that “offended” Collen is one she admits to not having read.
The article published Saturday by journalist Kent Babb focused on Mulkey and his methods of staying ahead of college basketball. Near the end was a line about the situation Mulkey left at Baylor.
Mulkey coached the Bears from 2000 to 2021 before leaving for LSU, and Collen has taken the helm in Waco since then.
Collen focused his comments on how Baylor was represented after the team nearly upset No. 1 seed USC in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Collen replaced Mulkey in Waco after the now-LSU head coach led Baylor for 21 years.
In a post-Mulkey world, Babb described Baylor women’s basketball as “left to wither”
“I’m not afraid to say I was really offended by the article that came out,” Collen said. ‘I didn’t read any of that. I don’t know what happened, but nothing is withering in Waco.
‘Nothing is withering in Waco… We are not, we are not a top team and you can’t say we are. “You can’t go to the Sweet 16 and take a No. 1 seed down to the wire in a one-possession game and say something is wilting in Waco,” Collen continued.
‘…There are some things blooming in Waco. “If you want to come write a paper and come to Waco and write about it next year, you’re welcome,” Collen added.
Since Mulkey’s departure, Baylor has reached at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament each season.
This season’s Sweet 16 finish is the show’s best with Collen.
Mulkey led LSU to a national championship last season and is three wins away from repeating that feat with her fifth national title as head coach.
