Around 500 people have been evacuated after a small fire broke out in a garbage chute at one of Sydney’s tallest residential towers.

Fire and Rescue NSW was called to the Greenland Centre building on Bathurst Street on Tuesday afternoon.

Several small fires are believed to have broken out in the garbage chute as well as in the basement bins.

At least six fire trucks were at the scene.

The Greenland Centre building is 235 m high and consists of more than 450 apartments.

More to come.
