Bathurst 1000 champion Brodie Kostecki has revealed that a member of his Erebus Motorsport team was attacked and hospitalized while celebrating victory at Mount Panorama.

Kostecki fended off hot rival Broc Feeney in the six-hour marathon at Mount Panorama on Sunday to win Australia’s biggest domestic motorsport prize.

However, the reigning Supercars champion revealed the victory soured when one of his crew members was attacked on Sunday night.

“It was a pretty good night with the team. Unfortunately, we had a little incident when one of our crew members went to the hospital and was attacked,” he told Sunrise on Monday morning.

“But otherwise it was a great night for the team, and getting the win with my teammate here, Todd, was awesome.”

When asked for more details about the incident, Kostecki responded: “Unfortunately, one of our crew members was attacked last night.

“It’s quite disappointing and kind of spoiled the evening.

“We wish Sam all the best and hope he makes a quick recovery, along with his partner, Tameika.”

NSW Police issued a statement saying they are following up on an incident in William St Bathurst that occurred on Monday morning.

Australian motorsport magazine and website Automatic action reports that one of Erebus’ data engineers was attacked while leaving a pub.

He was attacked from behind and the phrase “damn Erebus” was reportedly used.

“I can’t believe there are people like that in the world,” said Erebus CEO Barry Ryan.

“These young, innocent people were celebrating an achievement in life.”

Erebus is also reportedly offering a reward for information that helps locate the attackers involved.

Starting from pole position with co-driver Todd Hazelwood, Kostecki was uncatchable before a crash by Matt Payne brought about the first and only safety car of the race with 28 laps remaining.

The 26-year-old proved his worth against Feeney, alongside four-time Bathurst winner Jamie Whincup, in a sprint showdown to the finish line.

Kostecki won by just 1.35 seconds.

Feeney’s Red Bull teammate and championship leader Will Brown finished third with co-driver Scott Pye.

‘I just can’t believe it. “I’m amazed right now,” Kostecki said after the race.

‘Broc was on my neck the whole time. The whole time it was balls against the walls.

“It’s a little fun around here. If you slow down a little, you can get into trouble.

‘I just knew that if I did shooting laps every lap, I knew I wouldn’t make a mistake.

“It’s last year’s redemption, without a doubt.”
