Drugs for patients with Parkinson's, epilepsy and blood clots are recalled due to the fear that they have been stored incorrectly and may & # 39; seriously & # 39; be ineffective.

People with packages from Clexane, Neupro or Vimpat with a B&S Healthcare logo can be influenced by the recall.

The manufacturer, B & S Healthcare, has warned that the medicines have been temporarily removed from the supply chain and may not have been stored properly.

As a result, they may be less effective than they should be and health watchdogs have now asked pharmacists to send them back.

Other drugs for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, psoriasis and high cholesterol have also been recalled by pharmacists, not by patients.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) said that it is highly unlikely that patients will suffer, but the consequences can be & # 39; serious.

The body, which regulates the safety of medicines, said that no patient should stop taking their medication without the doctor having said so.

& # 39; For three specific drugs, there is little chance that their effectiveness will be compromised (because they are stable, legitimate drugs), but the consequences of a lack of effectiveness can be serious. That's why we treat them differently & # 39 ;, says the MHRA.

& # 39; If patients have any of these affected products, they should continue to take their medication and contact their doctor's office to arrange a new prescription.

& # 39; As soon as they have a new prescription, patients must send the affected parties back to their pharmacist. & # 39;

HOW CAN HIGH OR LOW TEMPERATURES STOP WORKING WITH DRUGS?

Medicines are usually supplied with storage instructions that determine whether they should, for example, be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

How medicines are stored is crucial to ensure that they remain effective in the period before a patient has to take them.

Many medicines must be stored between 2 ° C and 8 ° C – refrigerator temperature, some must be lower than 15 ° C or lower than 25 ° C – room temperature.

If medicines are not kept within the safe storage limits, the chemicals in them can be damaged.

Extreme cold or heat can irreversibly damage the form of proteins needed to make the medication work. For antibiotics, for example, if the chemical structure of a drug changes, it may lose its ability to attach to the bacteria or viruses for which it is designed to fight.

Temperatures can also cause physical changes to drugs that are not completely solid.

Mixed emulsions, suspensions or suppositories can separate or settle at certain temperatures, while components in liquid drugs can crystallize if they become too cold.

And some drugs contain chemicals that only dissolve in liquid at certain temperatures, so if they get too hot or too cold, they can become unstable.

Clexane is an injectable medicine that prevents blood clotting in patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pregnant women or after a heart attack.

Neupro patches stick to the skin and release a drug called rotigotine to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

And Vimpat, supplied in tablets, is an anti-epileptic medicine that is given to patients over the age of four with epilepsy.

All medicines affected by the recall are in Italian packaging and have a British B&S Healthcare label.

They have an expiration date between 30 June 2019 and 30 June 2023 and a total of 69 batches are subject to the warning.

Others who have been told that pharmacists must return are Crestor, Seebri Breezhaler, Dovobet, Incruse and Spiriva.

Patients do not need to arrange a new prescription for this and can continue to take it until they run out.

The recall of the MHRA was carried out under the Counterfeit Medicines Directive, which regulates the security of the pharmaceutical chain in Europe.

But the British regulator said there is no reason to believe that there is a problem with the production of the drugs involved, just that they may have been stored incorrectly.

Storing drugs at temperatures outside their optimum range can cause chemical changes that make them less effective, or cause liquids to separate or crystallize.

Certain brews can also become unstable if chemicals that contain them only dissolve in liquid between certain temperatures.

If someone's medicine is affected in this way and does not work properly, they can have harmful effects if they are treated for a serious illness.

It added: & # 39; The products are considered legitimate. There is no evidence that this has been tampered with and these drugs are stable at room temperature. & # 39;
