A basketball coach who dreamed of playing in the NBA has been accused of raping a 14-year-old girl he met through the social media app Snapchat.

Alieu Sheriff, 28, appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday charged with three counts each of rape and using the internet to procure children and two counts each of possession of child exploitation material and indecent treatment of children.

Police will allege that the sheriff contacted a 14-year-old girl on Snapchat telling her she was 18, the Mail reported.

The sheriff allegedly picked up the girl south of Brisbane in his car and raped her, during which she told him to stop and recorded videos on her phone.

Police raided his home in Slacks Creek, 24 kilometers south of Brisbane, on Thursday and seized electronic devices.

The devices allegedly contained videos of the teenager performing sexual acts, which amounted to possession of child exploitation material.

The sheriff said he had consensual sex with the girl and that she told him she was 16 and didn’t tell him to stop.

Sheriff was born in Liberia and came to Australia as a refugee with his family in 2003.

He got a scholarship to play basketball in the United States and told ABC in 2020 that his ‘ultimate goal’ was to play in the NBA.

Magistrate Belinda Merrin granted bail to the Sheriff on conditions that he lived at his home in Slacks Creek and did not contact the alleged victim.

The case will return to court on June 10.
