- Barnsley wants to sign Portuguese left back Kiki Afonso for next season
- The 27-year-old is a former Portugal U20 youth international and played in 2014
- Afonso is excited about the move, having previously spent a year in England in 2013
Barnsley has identified Portuguese left-back Kiki Afonso as a target as they aim to bounce back immediately from their relegation from last season’s championship.
The 27-year-old plays for Vizela from the Primeira Liga, but would like to go to England.
Former Portuguese U20 international Afonso has played a part in Vizela’s two recent promotion-winning campaigns and is ready for a new challenge.
Kiki Afonso, 27, has played for 11 teams in his career so far, including 10 in Portugal
Barnsley appointed Michael Duff as their new manager in a bid to quickly promote to the championship.
Preparations for their new season in League One are well underway as they defeated Worksop Town 3-1 in a friendly on Saturday.
Eager to bring in new faces, Duff has Afonso reserved for his defense.

Curiously, Afonso had stints with Dagenham and Redbridge in 2013 after leaving Rio Ave, but failed to impress and returned to Portugal to build his career.
He now feels he has unfinished business and is eager to see the move go through with Barnsley willing to offer a two-year contract.
Barnsley is all but ready to talk to Vizela to quickly reach an agreement.
Afonso has won two promotions with Vizela and played 25 league games last season
Despite being only 27 years old, Afonso has built a reputation as a journeyman of sorts, playing for 11 teams that had already started in Porto’s youth system.
Since last season, however, Afonso has become a mainstay in Vizela’s base line, with 29 times and three assists, after coming over from Belenenses SAD in 2019.
After a play-off finish in 2020/21, Barnsley fell to a hugely disappointing relegation by just 30 points as they finished last in the championship.
After spending a year at Dagenham & Redbridge in 2013, Afonso is eager to make the switch
