- He admitted that he is ‘flattered’ by the interest shown in him by the Red Devils
Frenkie de Jong admitted he was ‘flattered’ by Manchester United’s interest after the Holland midfielder put on a dazzling display in their 3-2 win over Wales.
The Barcelona star is United’s main summer goal as new boss Erik ten Hag looks set to reunite with the player who was such an important man to him during their time at Ajax.
Asked about United’s pursuit, De Jong said: “You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player, but I’m currently at the biggest club in the world and I feel great there, so no news.”

His former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has made De Jong his main target this summer
De Jong is valued at around £70 million by Barcelona and is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the game.
He led the show for the Netherlands for much of the game against Wales, who nearly escaped with a draw despite trailing 2-0.
Sportsmail previously reported that United’s interest in Danish star Christian Eriksen does not rule out a transfer for De Jong, who is seen as their main target.
Eriksen’s availability as a free agent is attractive to United, who are on a budget this summer after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
De Jong stole the show for the Netherlands when they defeated Wales 3-2 on Tuesday evening
While the former Tottenham and Ajax star is 30 years old and number 10 is not a priority position for United – with Donny van de Beek returning to Old Trafford as competition for Bruno Fernandes – the club will have to replace three attacking midfielders following the departure of Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba who was close to a return to Juventus on Tuesday night.
United see De Jong as a different type of midfielder and will continue negotiations with Barcelona for the £70million former Ajax star, regardless of Eriksen’s move.
It is clear that United have yet to make a formal offer for the 25-year-old Holland international, but are willing to part with the deal and pursue other options if the two sides cannot negotiate a price.
De Jong did say that he is currently playing for the ‘biggest club’ in world football
De Jong played under Ten Hag when Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019 before moving to Barcelona.
Last month, Barcelona manager Xavi said of De Jong: ‘For me he is a very important player. He has almost always been a starter.
“He is a fundamental footballer, but then there is the economic situation, on which we all depend.
“We need to know the financial situation to be able to make some decisions and then we’ll make some decision – I don’t mean Frenkie – I mean in general.
“He’s a player I really like, but we’ll see how the situation is.”
