Barcelona coach Xavi was furious at the perception of further refereeing injustice after seeing his team’s slim hopes of winning the Spanish title disappear.
“I’m not going to say anything about the referee because I’ll be penalized if I do, but it was there for everyone to see,” he said. “We were the better team tonight and we deserved to win.”
The Barcelona coach was dissatisfied because a shot on goal by Lamine Yamal in the first half was disallowed for not having crossed the line.
La Liga does not have goal-line technology and several freeze frames appeared inconclusive after the 16-year-old flicked a Raphinha corner goalwards and Madrid goalkeeper Lunin pushed the ball away on the line.
“I don’t want to comment on Xavi’s words,” Carlo Ancelotti responded. “We won this match with our energy and we gave ourselves a big advantage in the table.”
