Barcelona B misses promotion to the Segunda division in the playoffs for the second year in a row, despite attracting young first-team stars for the team … as they narrowly lose to UCAM Murcia in a ridiculous series with 18 penalties.
- Barcelona B was beaten 5-4 on penalties from UCAM Murcia to lose the play-off match
- It took 18 penalties to separate the teams after the game ended at 2-2
- Murcia is now through to the final to play for promotion to the Segunda division
- Barcelona B remains at the third level of Spanish football after a painful defeat
Barcelona B have again missed promotion to the Segunda division after losing a massive penalty shootout to UCAM Murcia.
The game finished 2-2 after extra time and after nine penalties were taken by each team, it was Murcia who won 5-4 to advance to the final.
It is the second year in a row that Barcelona B has missed in the play-offs, and it means they will spend another year in the third tier of Spanish football.
Barcelona B lost 5-4 on penalties from UCAM Murcia in a shootout in which 18 attempts were made
Rey Manaj scored a brace when it ended 2-2 after extra time, but Barcelona B was eliminated
Barca B got a huge boost before the game when it was confirmed that Oscar Mingueza would be allowed to play, having started the season with them before moving more to the first team.
Mingueza played 37 games for Ronald Koeman’s side this season, while Konrad De la Fuente made two replacement cameos in the Champions League.
De la Fuente had the ball in the net within three minutes, but it was ruled out and Murcia took the lead halfway through the first half.
A brace from Rey Manaj after the break, however, brought the visitors back to the front, before an 83-minute equalizer brought the game to extra time.
However, the parties still couldn’t separate and it went to a penalty shootout to decide who would advance to the play-off final.
Barca B goalkeeper Inaki Pena made four saves in the shootout, but that was not enough as after 18 penalties were taken, Murcia won the game 5-4.
It means that Barca B has not reached the final and will not have a chance to be promoted to the Seguna division, where they last played in the 2017/18 season.
Last season, they reached the playoff final, but were beaten 2-1 by CE Sabadell and it was an equally painful story 12 months later.
The defeat means that Barca B misses out on promotion and remains at the third level in Spain
