An international student died while standing outside his house after his best friend allegedly ran over him when he pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.
Ismail Hossain, 25, was at his home in Wiley Park, in Sydney’s southwest, shortly after midnight on Monday when Nasir Uddin, 24, pulled into the driveway.
It is alleged that Uddin went to reverse the Toyota Corolla but instead stepped on the accelerator.
He was subsequently charged with careless driving causing death and appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Monday afternoon where he was granted bail.
The court heard Hossain went to his friend’s house on Sunday night to return a bicycle he had borrowed for work.
Police details allege that the 25-year-old went to greet the group of Bangladeshi friends who live in the Cornelia Street house.
Hossain was at the house around 12:15 a.m. when he went out to park his red Toyota Camry in the front yard.
While heading back to the house, Uddin allegedly pulled into the driveway and attempted to park his Toyota Corolla.
Ismael Hossain was fatally run over on a suburban road and pinned against a shared house.
Damage shows where Nassir Uddin allegedly crashed his car into his friend Mr Hossain
It is alleged that during the maneuver, Uddin ran over Mr. Hossain with his car.
“The impulse pushed (Mr. Hossain) against the corner wall of the residence, immobilizing him and causing serious head injuries,” the police fact sheet alleges, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
“Police believe the defendant accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.”
Police allege Uddin reversed his car several meters after the collision.
His friends ran outside after hearing a loud bang where they found Mr Hossain lying on the ground and Uddin in the front yard.
Neighbors also came to his aid.
“We just heard a loud noise, like a house was hitting, so we went outside and saw someone else crying,” a witness told Nine News.
Emergency crews attended the scene but were unable to revive Mr Hossain.
He and Uddin were international students from Bangladesh and were understood to have been friends for a long time.
Police established the crime scene shortly after the incident on Monday morning.
Specialized police established and examined the crime scene.
Police arrested Uddin and took him to hospital for mandatory tests before he was taken to Campsie police station, where he was charged with careless driving causing death.
He appeared at Parramatta Bail Court today where he was granted bail on a $2000 surety.
He had to surrender his passport and report to police daily as part of his bail conditions.
Uddin will appear at Bankstown Local Court on October 15.
