More than 100 people trying to escape the destruction on the Bahamas have been kicked from a lifeboat to the US because they did not have an American visa.

Approximately 130 Bahamians in Freeport were forced to board a ferry before departing for Florida this Sunday evening after a surprise announcement had been made on board without those without a visa being able to enter the US to seek refuge.

& # 39; Please, anyone who does not have an American visa, please disembark, & # 39; the announcement sounded through the loudspeaker on board, leaving Bahamians astonished and confused after initially being told that they could board with only a passport and police record.

This is only a few days after Florida lawmakers Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have urged President Trump to abandon visa requirements or to suspend them for Bahamas citizens who have family members in the US and seek refuge after Hurricane Dorian has been blown through the islands.

Hundreds of evacuees stand in line for hours to board the ferry to Fort Lauderdale.

But images from within the lifeboat show hordes of people – including children – leaving the ferry, leaving them stranded on land destroyed by Hurricane Dorian.

& # 39; They originally said you could come with a police record and without a visa and now they are taking it back & # 39 ;, a woman on board said Brian Entin while the boat pulled out of the dock. & # 39; That is really ridiculous. That's awful, & # 39;

Renard Oliver, who was forced off the ferry in Freeport, spoke while holding his daughter in his arms.

& # 39; They were called by CBP (Customs and Border Protection) and CBP told them that anyone who does not have an American visa and who travels on police records must leave & # 39 ;, Oliver said.

& # 39; Normally you can at least use the police register by plane. So I have to take my baby off. At the last minute this is a bit disappointed. It is painful to see my daughters cry. & # 39;

Journalist Brian Entin said the ferry crew was initially told to accept Bahamian evacuees with a passport and a copy of the police register, so they boarded the boat without a problem.

But & # 39; when they manifestly sent to US Customs and Border Patrol – they were told that people without a visa would not be accepted, & # 39; said Etin.

It is not clear who ordered the evacuees without a ship's visa.

Hundreds were only rejected after the cruise ship was full.

& # 39; This is not normal. Normally Bahamians can travel to the US with a passport and a print of their police report. This is a mess, & Etina said on Twitter.
