Katy Perry has received further criticism after being announced as the headline act for the 2024 AFL Grand Final in September.
This time, the pop star was the subject of ridicule from bewildered US fans, who suggested the concert was a “step backwards” for the 39-year-old, with some even branding the Grand Final a “fabricated event”.
The outpouring came after Pop Crave posted the ad on X on Thursday alongside a promotional photo of Katy holding an AFL football.
‘Katy Perry will headline Telstra Pre-Game Entertainment at the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final on September 28.’
However, US fans were quick to admit their bewilderment at the announcement, with one fan commenting: “Katy = unknown made-up event” and pointing out that her pop rival Lady Gaga is widely considered to perform at the Paris Olympics.
Similarly, another shared a gif of Seinfeld’s George Costanza squinting with the caption: “What kind of obscure sporting event is this?”
One commentator mocked the lackluster performance of Katy’s recent singles, such as Woman’s World, saying: “She’ll be performing all her songs from before 2018 because the general public doesn’t know anything recent.”
Despite the AFL Grand Final being one of the most popular events on the Australian sporting calendar, one fan suggested the booking was another sign of the singer’s downward trajectory.
Katy Perry has been mocked once again, this time by bemused American fans who suggested her upcoming AFL Grand Final performance was a “step back” for the 39-year-old, with some even branding the Grand Final a “made-up event”.
“This is another step towards opening car dealerships,” they wrote.
Australian rules football fans also took to social media on Thursday to criticise the AFL following its announcement that Perry would be performing.
News that the Roar singer would be travelling to Australia for September’s clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was met with a chorus of disapproval from fans, with many questioning why the AFL needed to import overseas talent.

“The AFL Grand Final should be a great way to showcase Australian bands. Let @birdsoftokyo do it again, they were amazing when they did it,” commented one fan on X.
Another expressed a similar sentiment, suggesting that foreign artists recruited for the Grand Final were often past their sell-by date.
“The AFL continues its long-standing practice of signing foreign artists a decade or two after they became popular,” one commentator wrote, while another added: “this would have been huge a decade ago.”

Katy confirmed the news in a statement on Thursday, sharing her excitement at returning to Australia.
‘I’m really excited to be back in Australia and at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final.
“See you in September, hey, hey, hey!” he said.
The announcement comes after DailyMail.com revealed that Katy is “pointing the finger at everyone but herself” after her comeback single Woman’s World failed to chart.
Sources close to the singer claim that she is desperate to come up with a new plan to save her musical comeback.
The singer released the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio album 143 last Thursday, but the song, billed as an empowering feminist anthem, was quickly dismissed as unoriginal, hypocritical and formulaic.
