Everton defender James Tarkowski said his team’s 6-0 defeat to Chelsea was “the biggest shame” he has felt in his career.

The Toffees played off the field as they suffered a major blow in their latest attempt to survive relegation from the Premier League, with Chelsea leading 4-0 at half-time on their way to a rout.

Cole Palmer scored four goals to move level with Erling Haaland in the race to win the Golden Boot, but it was a night to remember for Sean Dyche and his Everton team.

Tarkowski was the man sent to work with the media after the game, in front of the Sky Sports cameras to discuss the defeat before Dyche himself backed Tarkowski and apologized to the fans.

The former England defender wore a somber look as he tried to explain the result and admitted that he and the rest of his team-mates were to blame for the result.

‘[It will] “The report will be long,” Tarkowski said. ‘Poor performance, the most embarrassed I have ever felt as an individual.

‘It shows where we are today. We can only apologize to the fans who supported us. It’s up to the players, not the coach or staff. There are no excuses on our part, we have to brush our feet since some important weeks are coming up.

‘We conceded six goals and you should be ashamed. Nothing to do with technical aspects, people hit and run and it is difficult to summarize it. “I’ve had some tough times here, but the fans support us in the next game, so I hope they will be there to support us again.”

The result was the worst of Sean Dyche’s career from a scoring perspective, and the manager had already expressed his frustration at his team’s failures at the top of the pitch.

While that continued (Beto missed a golden opportunity at 0-0 which racked up an xG of 0.94), there were also problems at the other end, with his team torn apart and sometimes causing their own downfalls.

He said his team was “miles away” and stressed the importance of the upcoming games.

“Ugly night,” he said after the game. ‘Collectively a bad night without a doubt. Perfect storm in the way we seemed to be punished. The start of the game is perfect, there is a strange feeling in Chelsea: we thought we could make them feel comfortable, and we did.

‘The goals, miles away. For people learning their trade, you have to make tackles and read the game. Slightly better in the second half.

‘You have to do the basics that we didn’t do. Chelsea are a good group of players and they play around you. Recovery is everywhere. Nothing to do with anyone else, we were miles away.

‘That can’t happen again. “Six important games await us.”
