Baby dies after home birth goes wrong in Perth

Tragedy as newborn baby dies after home birth goes horribly wrong in Perth – with child’s father desperately trying to resuscitate her

A girl has died after a home birth ended in tragedy in Perth.

The child was born around 3 a.m. Saturday at a home in Wattle Grove, but was not breathing when she arrived.

The baby’s father and a doula were the only ones present when she became trapped during labour, WATday reports.

The doula reportedly did not know how to resuscitate the newborn, with the father desperately trying to resuscitate the baby with CPR until paramedics arrived 10 minutes later.

The baby was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

A doula is a trained counselor, who is not a health care professional, who provides non-medical, one-on-one support and care to a woman during pregnancy and before and after childbirth.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health told WAtoday that it is against the law for a doula to provide clinical care during labor or delivery.

Any doula who violates these rules could be subject to a fine of up to $30,000.

The chief obstetrician at the Australian College of Midwives, told PerthNow that it is crucial to have a trained medical professional present when a woman gives birth at home.

“As you can see in these tragic circumstances, there is no trained health professional who can recognize when there is a deviation from the norm, there was no one to identify the emergency early,” she said.

“If a woman is giving birth at home, it’s important to have a trained professional who is an emergency expert and able to perform CPR even though birth is inherently safe.”

The police will prepare a report for the coroner about the death of the baby.
