An eight-week-old baby died last month after contracting Covid-19 – the youngest person to die with the virus in Australia so far during the pandemic.

Hunter New England Health confirmed the death on Friday morning and said the case had been referred to the coroner to determine whether the virus was the primary cause of death.

“Given the uncertainty about the cause of death, the case has been referred to the coroner,” the statement said.

It would be inappropriate to comment further while the coroner investigates this tragic death.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the family with whom we remain in contact and continue to support.”

The tragic death comes just weeks after a 13-month-old girl from Adelaide and a three-year-old boy from Sydney died of Covid-19.

The 13-month-old girl had no underlying conditions, while the three-year-old boy suffered from a rare genetic condition.
