Sunrise star Katie Brown experienced an awkward moment on Wednesday that left the popular reporter red-faced.
The 32-year-old journalist was interviewing students during a live crossover at a school in western Sydney about their HSC results when she mistook a teacher for a student.
Katie was moving among a large group of students enjoying a post-HSC celebration when the problem occurred.
He had just finished speaking to a student at St John Paul II Catholic School in Schofields when he touched the shoulder of a woman nearby.
“Who do we have here?” Katie asked.
After the teacher identified herself as Mrs Canning, Katie cheekily asked her about her HSC results.

Katie was moving among a large group of students enjoying a post-HSC celebration when the problem occurred.
However, the teacher refused to play along and changed focus to highlight her student’s achievements.
‘I’m very proud of them. “They did very well and worked very hard,” he said.
Katie recovered quickly and said to the young teacher, “You are aging very well too, I mistook you for a student.”
It’s not the first time Kate’s effortless style has caused a moment of embarrassment at Brekkie Central.
In April, Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington were left speechless during an O’Brien Icehouse weather crossover when Katie recited several ice hockey-related puns.
Katie was joined by Melbourne Ice coach Kerry Goulet during the segment to chat happily before reading the weather forecast.
But things went downhill when Katie started making various record puns.
‘I can hear a lot of noises around here… Are they going to wrinkle me?’ she joked.
The cameras then returned to presenters Barr, 56, and Shirvington, 45, who did not look amused.
“That’s too much,” Shrivo said quietly while shaking his head, while Barr tried to ignore the puns with a nervous laugh.
But the banter continued, and Goulet told Katie that she would be angry if she replaced the goalkeeper.
‘Line of the day. Let’s not get carried away, Katie,” Shirvo said.
‘Exactly!’ Barr agreed.
Katie was quickly rejected after she asked the teacher about her HSC results.
Katie rose to popularity when she replaced regular weather reporter Sam Mac in 2022.
In 2023, she landed a high-profile job as a ‘roving reporter’ for the top-rated breakfast show and regularly appears in humorous and light-hearted segments.
In November of that year, reports claimed that Katie will take over as sports presenter on the breakfast show in 2025.
The journalist was hoping to oust breakfast show veteran Mark Beretta, who has worked with the Channel Seven show on and off since 2000.
According to a source, Katie is receiving counseling to transition into the sports broadcaster position after her new two-year contract ends, Woman’s Day reported.
“Katie is simply a country girl who appeals to all audiences with her no-nonsense style,” they told the publication on Monday.
They went on to say that “some people behind the scenes have quietly expressed that Mark’s flashy lifestyle might not always resonate with viewers.”
“The irony of all this is that Beretta is one of Katie’s biggest supporters and has almost been her mentor,” they added.
At the time of the reports, Mark had just signed a new contract to stay at Sunrise for another two years, and some were surprised by the short duration of the deal.
