This is the awkward moment several dignitaries appeared to ignore Spain’s Princess Leonor during a Spanish National Day reception on Saturday.

The 18-year-old Spanish royal, heir to the throne, looked elegant in her military attire as she attended the ceremony in Madrid.

But while attendees enthusiastically shook hands with her parents, Queen Letizia and King Felipe, their eldest daughter seemed to feel slighted.

In an awkward video filmed at the reception, Leonor can be seen extending her hand, expectantly waiting for a handshake.

But thinking her job was done after shaking the Queen’s hand, a woman, wearing a long printed dress, walked straight past her.

Moments after the first incident, in her joy after chatting with the Queen, another was so distracted that she also overlooked Leonor, before turning to greet her.

Luckily, the princess saw the funny side of the situation and seemed amused both times.

Princess Leonor is currently completing three years of military service in the Navy and attended the event dressed in her military dress.

In Spain, Columbus Day is celebrated every year on October 12. Among the celebrations is a military parade attended by the royal couple, who joined other authorities in the Plaza de Neptuno and gathered for the event, before presiding over the raising of the Spanish national flag.

Queen Letizia of Spain didn’t let the rain dampen her style as she stepped out in Madrid for her public appearance.

The 52-year-old royal was accompanied by her husband, King Felipe, 56, as she presided over the National Day military parade, known in Spain as Columbus Day.

Unfortunately, the weather was not ideal: the autumn event brought gray skies and drizzle.

But this didn’t stop Letizia from looking typically chic, as she paired her classic beige belted Mac with a red dress, matching pointed pumps, and a clutch bag in the same shade.

Some photos show the mother of two holding a large navy blue umbrella to protect herself from the rain while heading to the engagement.

And while there are always plenty of high-profile guests in attendance, most eyes tend to be on Queen Letizia, as keen royal watchers are eager to check out her style and observe her royal presence.

The daytime event, which invites female guests to dress in dresses and men to wear suits, always attracts an elegant crowd.

And Letizia did not disappoint, pairing her practical yet elegant look with standout accessories in a flattering shade of scarlet.

As she often chooses to do, the mother of two wore her thick brunette tresses loose, letting her shiny locks fall over her shoulders.

And she let her natural beauty shine with fresh makeup that highlighted her glowing complexion and made her brown eyes the center of attention, with soft, smoky brown eyeliner and shadow.

The peach blush made the most of her striking high cheekbones, while her lips looked elegant yet subtle in a flattering, slightly pearlescent dark nude-style shade.

The air and land military parade is attended by various security, civil protection and emergency organizations, as well as Units of the Armies, the Navy, the Civil Guard, the Military Emergency Corps, the Royal Guard and the State Security Forces and Bodies.

Meanwhile, her husband Felipe looked equally dapper, wearing a formal uniform for the annual event.

However, according to Spanish media reports, they were not joined by their daughter, Infanta Sofia, 17, who is currently studying for her two-year International Baccalaureate diploma at a Welsh boarding school.

He began studying at UWC Atlantic College, which is based in a 12th-century castle in south Wales, in September 2023.
