Author mocked after complaining that movie about gay Asian men doesn’t feature enough women

Queer author Hanna Rosin is forced to apologize for complaining that a new Hulu movie about gay Asian men vacationing on Fire Island doesn’t have enough women

  • Rosin tweeted Monday criticizing the film Fire Island, which is loosely based on Pride and Prejudice, and tells the story of a group of gay Asian men.
  • She said it failed the Bechdel test – which requires at least two women, talking to each other about something other than a man
  • “So @Hulu, #FireIslandMovie gets an F on the Bechdel test in a brand new way,” she tweeted
  • The response was immediate, with many pointing out that the film was not about women and that gay Asian men are significantly underrepresented on screen.
  • Even Alison Bechdel, 61, joined in, tweeting the movie that was over because she judged there was a new category
  • “Two men talk to each other about the female protagonist of an Alice Munro story in a screenplay structured on a Jane Austen novel = pas,” she said
  • Rosin tweeted an apology on Tuesday, saying she realized the tweet was “offensive” and “careless and thoughtless”
  • She added: ‘The film told a story about queer AAPI men, whose experiences are not reflected enough in movies or elsewhere’

An Israeli-American journalist and podcast host has been forced to apologize after complaining that a romantic comedy about gay Asian men vacationing on New York’s Fire Island didn’t have enough women.

Hanna Rosin, 52, said the Hulu movie, titled Fire Island, failed the Bechdel test — an 80s rule that said a movie must have a minimum of two women talking to each other about something other than a man. It is now seen as an estimate of how sexist a movie is.

The film is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Rosin tweeted Monday: “So @Hulu, #FireIslandMovie gets an F- on the Bechdel test in a whole new way.

“Are we just ignoring the boring lesbian stereotypes because they’re cute gay Asian guys?

“Is this revenge for all those years of the gay boy’s best friend?”

The response was immediate and devastating.

Gay singer Simon Curtis accused Rosin – who is queer – of making an “extremely cruel” comment.

“How do you think a gay Asian ‘boy’ in the US has literally NEVER seen himself in a movie?” Curtis tweeted.

“Are you really so self-centered, if incapable of stepping outside of yourself for a moment, that you can’t see that maybe it’s not *supposed* to be about you?”

Others found her comments ridiculous rather than insulting.

“I had a conversation with myself and failed the bechdel test,” said one.

Comedian Vinny Thomas said, “Fire Island movie failed the bechamel test. The homosexuals depicted have never prepared bechamel.’

Another added: “I fail the bechdel test because I don’t talk to anyone.”

Bowen Yang, the SNL writer and comedian who starred in Fire Island, posted a photo of himself with 1970s porn star Robin Byrd.

“F- on the bechdel test,” he said.

Even Alison Bechdel, the 61-year-old cartoonist who created the test, joined in.

“Okay, I just added a corollary of the Bechdel test: two men talking to each other about the female protagonist of an Alice Munro story in a screenplay structured from a Jane Austen novel = pas,” said they.

Rosin then apologized for her comments.

“I deleted a tweet that many of you rightly pointed out as offensive,” she said on Tuesday.

“I’ve read your comments and I hear you. My tweet was careless and thoughtless. Really.

“The film told a story about queer AAPI men, whose experiences aren’t reflected enough in movies or elsewhere.

“What I had to say was irrelevant, not to mention a buzzkill on a fun summer movie. It’s a cliché, but the fact that I didn’t see it coming means I still have a lot to learn.

“The last thing I want is to pit members of my community against each other. I offer my sincere apologies to those who have been hurt by my words.”
