The true state of Donald and Melania Trump’s marriage is the last unanswered mystery surrounding the country’s 45th president, according to the man who has written three books about his turbulent years.
“Nobody really knows where Melania lives,” Michael Wolff, New York Times bestselling author of Landslide: The Last Days of the Trump Presidency, told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview.
‘She’s not often with him. This was true when he was in the White House and it is true now.
“People around Trump still have questions, but they don’t want to ask them. It remains the third rail that no one wants to touch.’
Wolff came no closer to finding the answer to the relationship conundrum when he was invited to dinner with the couple at Trump’s Florida club, Mar-a-Lago. He sat for hours with the two of them giving the impression of being a happy couple.
“They did it with great zest,” he said. “Dinner was like a wedding feast, with Donald and Melania at the main table greeting people all the time.”

Wolff just published landslide, his third report of the Trump presidency. The ex-president called him to Mar-a-Lago for a lengthy interview, despite the first two books, Fire And Fury, published in 2018, and Siege, coming out the following year.
The 67-year-old author was surprised to get the chance to interview Trump just two months after he left office. The invitation came in March after an associate told Trump that a third book is being worked on.
Trump said, ‘That guy’s getting ratings, let’s see.’ So I was invited to Mar-a-Lago to interview the former president and have dinner with him and Melania.
‘I sat with him for several hours and was invited to dinner. It was amazing, it was like we were best friends.

He said, “These books you write were very mean and very wrong, but I don’t blame you, I blame my people.” Then we went on the run, spent most of the afternoon, I listened and he talks.’
Wolff said Trump lives in “a separate reality,” still obsessed with the idea that last year’s election was stolen from him.
“He could hardly talk about anything else. He spins these numbers, which are constantly changing, and god knows where he’s getting them from.’
Wolff told DailyMail.com that Trump is confident Joe Biden will die while in office and will be swept back to the White House in a landslide after defeating Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
“He believes Biden will not survive his term because he is too old,” Wolff said in an exclusive interview.
“He continues to talk about Biden with Alzheimer’s disease and he’s confident Harris will be the Democratic nominee in 2024 and it won’t be a contest,” he added.
“He doesn’t believe there’s a chance Kamala can beat him, but then he thought Joe Biden wouldn’t pose a threat. That’s why he says the election must have been stolen, because he couldn’t possibly have been defeated by Biden.’
Trump’s confidence in his inevitable victory was shattered for a short time in June 2020 after Biden effectively won the nomination. He was haunted by a nightmare scenario that the Democrats would replace his aging rival with a more youthful Andrew Cuomo and then add Michelle Obama to the ticket as vice president.
At the time, New York Governor Cuomo was in the spotlight for his alleged handling of the COVID crisis in his state.
“Trump was terrified because he thought this was the only ticket that could beat him,” Wolff said.
Wolff said the often-molded idea that Trump would somehow be reinstated after evidence comes that he won the election is not something the former president really believes.
“I have asked him directly to return to office before the election and he clearly wants the discussion to take place there and wants people to think he believes this,” Wolff said.
“But he was very, very careful with me not to make that claim.”

Wolff believes the only reason Trump may not be trying to run for second president with two separate terms would be if his health fails between now and 2024.
And if that were to happen, he will do everything he can to prevent two certain people from getting the GOP nomination.
Wolff just wrote Landslide, his third account of the Trump presidency
They are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his own former Vice President Mike Pence, Wolff said.
“He firmly believes that DeSantis will run away even if he does, and he’s absolutely devastated.
“The only way he can make DeSantis run is to come to Mar-a-Lago and kiss his ring in a particularly cringe-like manner.
“If DeSantis is public enemy number one, Mike Pence is number two,” Wolff added. And the more Pence there is, the more furious Trump gets.
“In my book, I report on three separate meetings where Pence told him directly that he would in no way support anything to overturn the electoral college vote.
“He still believes that Pence ‘could and should have done the right thing’.”
There are two other reasons for Trump to run again, Wolff said. First, he ‘lives for’ speaking at large gatherings and knows that the only way to get the crowds to come is if they believe he will inevitably be a candidate.
The second is that he believes it will prevent prosecution in the ongoing criminal and civil investigations.
“It gives him the means to say that the legal action against him is all political. They persecute because he is so powerful, they do it for purely political reasons.’
‘He is firmly convinced’ [Ron] DeSantis is going to run, even if he does, and it blows his mind,” Wolff said. “The only way he can make DeSantis run is to come to Mar-a-Lago and kiss his ring in a particularly cringing way.”
If Trump doesn’t run by 2024 — when he will be five months older than Biden when he won the presidency — Wolff believes he will make sure his chosen candidate wins the Republican nomination.
And that person may very well be a relative, son Don Jr. or daughter Ivanka, or a political ally.
“If you look at people like Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz, who would love to run away, Trump is such a dominant force in the party that they won’t if there’s a chance he will.
“This is going to be it. Who dares to cross it? Who dares the chance that they can take on him and not get damaged within the party?
“If Trump is as strong as he thinks he is — and it’s entirely possible he is — it’s a gamble that would ruin their entire career in the Republican Party.”
Wolff said one trick Trump still has up his sleeve is his ability to bring in potential voters. During the 2020 congressional elections, he held a series of what he called “teleral rallies,” in which he got up to 40,000 people on the phone at once to hear him back from a candidate during a five- to 10-minute speech.
He plans to do the same in 2022, both in the primaries and in the midterm elections themselves.
“If he finds out in 2022 that he is the kingmaker, then he will definitely be walking again in 2024,” said Wolff.
“Make no mistake, we haven’t heard the latest from Donald Trump.”
