Turkey sealed a 2-1 win against Austria on Tuesday night and booked a draw against the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, thanks to a sensational double from Merih Demiral.

It took just 57 seconds for Turkey to take the lead, with Demiral firing a left-footed shot into the roof of the net as Austria raced to clear Arder Guler’s corner into the penalty area.

It was the fastest goal ever scored in the knockout stages of the European Championship.

Turkey went into the break with a 1-0 lead but a frantic second half followed as rain began to fall at Red Bull Arena.

Demiral would double his team’s lead in the 59th minute, again from a corner, rising above the Austrian defensive line to head in a ball from Guler.

But the two-goal lead would not last long as Michael Gregoritsch pulled one back for Ralf Rangnick’s side seven minutes later, heading in Stefan Posch’s header from a free-kick.

An extraordinary save from Mert Gunok would deny Austria an equaliser in the final minute, when the goalkeeper deflected the ball off his line.
