Directions to Grow Sea-Monkeys

  • The tank must be filled with water up to the filling line.
  • A water purification pack must be added to the water to clean it before adding Sea-Monkeys.
  • Open and empty the Sea-Monkey egg package in the water.
  • The Sea-Monkey eggs are a dry powder due to cryptobiosis, a paused animation state that occurs naturally in Sea-Monkeys to help them survive until ideal conditions appear.

To create the instant pets, children should pour water into the tank, empty the first bag labeled ‘water purifier’ and let sit for 24 hours.

Keep the aquarium in the shade, away from direct sunlight, pour the second bag labeled ‘instant live eggs’ into the water the next day and stir for a minute.

After five days, children can add the first scoop of ‘growth food’ to the water. Sea-Monkeys may only be fed once a week.

The toy has been a huge success in Australian homes for decades, and parents nowadays buy it as birthday or Christmas gifts for their kids.

“They were a Christmas hit with the little kids and a fun throwback for the parents. So far, sea monkeys are still alive, and that’s luckier than we had with the originals in the early 90s, “said one mother.

Another shopper said: “A bit nostalgic, Kmart has original Sea Monkeys! I’m so excited, I can’t wait for these little boys to grow. ‘

Sea-Monkeys are a type of brine shrimp naturally found in salt lakes.

Sea-Monkeys history dates back to 1957 after Harold von Braunhut came across a tank of ‘overlooked’ brine shrimp used as fish food in a pet store.

The American man saw a niche in the market for ‘instant pets’ that could teach children about the peculiarities of nature.

So he started experimenting with how to ‘store’ and ‘resuscitate’ them in his small lab, and in 1960 introduced them to the world as ‘Instant Life’.

And Sea-Monkeys do indeed exhibit. How they come to life, however, is a well-kept, patented secret interplay of osmosis, controlled pH fluctuations and chemical formulations. The ‘original’ formula is kept under lock and key and is still made in the US to this day, ” the website says.

Initially, the toys didn’t sell at all after the brand struggled to get sellers on board.

“So Harold came up with the idea to place an ad for ‘Instant Life’ in comic books to market directly to children,” it said.

At the time, the toys could be ordered directly by post from Sea-Monkey headquarters.

At night, orders flew in and the Sea-Monkeys began their long career to capture the imaginations of millions of children. ”
