Australians have been left divided after terrifying footage was captured of the moment a truck driver ran over a skateboarder running a red light.

Dashcam footage showed the skateboarder crossing the road before being hit by a truck on Crown Street in Wollongong, New South Wales, at 7.27pm in February.

The skater was seen taking large strides on the right side of the road, before planting both feet on his board and sliding to the left side.

Since the light was red, there was no oncoming traffic and cars stopped at the light.

However, what the skater did not count on was a truck that ran the red light and was traveling in the outside left lane.

As the skater was crossing the street, it appears as if he noticed the truck and attempted to skate around it.

He was then struck by the trailer attached to the rear of the vehicle.

Footage was shared on Facebook and revealed that the skater “got up shortly after and was not seriously injured.”

Social media users were divided over who was to blame, with some saying the skateboarder was crossing at a pedestrian “crossing point” and the truck driver was “totally to blame.”

‘How red does the trucker need? [the traffic light] be?’ one wrote.

“The truck driver should be charged with attempted murder,” said another.

“Luckily the guest was able to get up, otherwise he would/should have gone to jail,” one wrote.

“That idiot in the truck is the only one to blame here,” said another.

Others placed the blame firmly on the skater, who they said was crossing the street “diagonally” and was on the wrong side of the street.

‘He was tackling like an entitled idiot and he got what he deserved!!!’ one wrote.

Moment of impact: The skateboarder was picked up by the truck’s trailer after the driver ran the red light. Facebook post addressed to Dash Cam owners in Australia said the skater was not “seriously injured” (pictured)

“Stupid skater,” said another.

“He should be charged with driving on the wrong side of the road, running a red light and causing malicious damage by causing an accident to a truck,” one wrote.

However, most Australians believed both sides were to blame and one called them “idiots”.

“No sympathy for any of the clowns,” one wrote.

“When two mistakes make one mistake,” said another.

“Don’t run a red light and look both ways before crossing a street,” one wrote.

“The skateboarder and the trucker ran the red light,” said another.

“I guess this is what happens when you don’t take your own personal safety into account and when people run red lights,” one wrote.
