Aussie woman shocked by bag of chips price in Coles: ‘Do people really pay for this?’
- Bag of chips $8.50 at Woolworth’s
- Doritos $8.90 in coles
Chips have become the latest item to be hit by Australia’s crippling inflationary crisis, after a bag of chips rose in price to $8.50.
Christina Podolyan found a bag of Smith’s Salt & Vinegar chips for the price at her local Woolworth’s.
“You know inflation is hitting hard when a bag of chips doesn’t cost $8.50,” she said of the 12-ounce bag.
“Don’t worry, I’ll just do without,” she added.
Many others were also shocked by the price, saying that treat foods had become unaffordable.

“Inflation is going to make me sane,” one person replied on her TikTok video.
“There were two blocks of chocolate on sale for $10, my heart sank. Normally they would sell two for five dollars,’ said another.
It comes as another Aussie found out that Doritos also rose in price.
Kay Calamatta, of the Gold Coast, said she was shocked to find a $280 box of Doritos on sale for $8.90
“Grocery store prices are out of control,” she said in a video.
“Anyone remember when chips were $5 a box?
Many said cheese, dishwasher tablets and Pepsi and chocolate have all gone up in price too.
It’s because customers were outraged after noticing that a popular jar of Cottee’s jam had disappeared from shelves, fearing it will be replaced with a smaller size for the same price.

Another woman couldn’t believe the price of boxed chips
A customer claims that the 500g jar of Cottee’s apricot jam, priced at $3, has been secretly discontinued – but a 375g jar is available new for $2.80.
A conversation about “shrinkage inflation” sparked on Reddit after comparing the two sizes at the store.
“The old 500 gram Cottee’s jam was $3 at my local Woolworths. The new 375g jars cost $2.80,” the Redditor wrote alongside an image.
‘The old 500 g jar has been put on sale and is gone for good. Buy them while you still can.’
It seems all flavors have been incorporated, not just apricot.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Kraft Heinz, the company that owns Cottee’s, for comment.
Earlier this month, Woolworths began selling a box of Cadbury favorites for a whopping $32.
The price of the box of chocolates, which recently removed two popular treats, has angered Australians, who say it is ‘ridiculous’. Others joked that you need Afterpay to finance the purchase.
Favorite boxes are sold in different sizes depending on the retailer, making it more difficult for customers to compare prices.

However, the $32 box works out to a whopping $3.90 per 100 grams, while the “regular” box costs $2.12 per 100 grams.
It’s the latest in a long line of beloved Aussie products whose prices have increased in recent months, including the Coles Mud Cake, Ritz Crackers and Kettle Chips.
“This is ridiculous, I am considering protesting for a week with no sugar and no chocolate,” one person wrote online in response to the price hike.
