Although wearing white is a wedding faux pas, Redditors thought it was appropriate for a summer baby shower.

A woman was left baffled after she was told to leave her high school friend’s baby shower because of her choice of dress.

On Reddit, the woman explained that she had worn what she thought was an appropriate white and blue floral dress to help her old friend Claire celebrate her impending birth.

But the mother-to-be did not agree with her white appearance.

“I didn’t think about it because, as far as I know, white is only inappropriate for wedding events,” she said.

Upon arrival, the hostess’ “mood seemed to immediately sour” and she became “instantly cold” toward her friend.

Then a mutual friend took her aside and told her to leave the party.

“She said Claire was offended by my ‘attention-seeking behavior’ and that it was inappropriate to wear white to Claire’s event. I left,” she said.

Friends in the tight-knit group refused to take sides, and some even suggested that she should apologize to the host, even if she wasn’t wrong.

“I’m very confused,” she said.

Commenters were quick to address the confusion and defend the woman.

“My thoughts immediately went to some stupid reason… you probably looked beautiful in that dress and she felt fat and ugly,” one suggested.

Another agreed: “I’ve never heard of not wearing white to a baby shower.” It seems like she was feeling insecure and something about your appearance made her feel bad about herself. Although that sucks, it’s not your fault.

One Redditor surmised that the blue of the dress and not the white could have been the cause of the unintentional offense if it had been seen as an impermissible revelation of the baby’s sex.

Most people agreed that the woman needed new friends, and one of them asked, “Did you take your gift with you when you left?”

Redditors seemed united in their mockery of Claire.

“Now pregnant women want ALL the attention at a baby shower, which is nothing more than a gift,” one said.

This isn’t the first time that dress shaming at a formal event has been a hot topic online.

The Louisiana mother of the bride recently sparked a fierce debate with her choice of outfit for her daughter’s wedding.

Wearing a stunning pale green floral dress with a regal train, many argued that her eye-catching outfit was inappropriate as it completely overshadowed the bride on her special day.
